Can God Give Priesthood To Whoever He Wishes?

Now chatting with: Calee and Kaylie

Kaylie8:02 PM

Hi Brooke! My name is Kaylie nice to meet you :) How can I help you today?

Brooke8:03 PM

Is there an example in the Bible of an angel giving someone priesthood?

Now chatting with: Kaylie

Kaylie8:07 PM

Not the priesthood, but power and keys of the kingdom of heaven.

Kaylie8:08 PM

As recorded in Matthew 17:1-13, Mark 9:2-13, Moses Elijah and John the Baptist appeared to Peter James and John conferring the keys of the kingdom of heaven which is the authority over specific ordinances. The angels didn't confer the Priesthood upon them, Christ did, but the angels gave them the keys.

What inspired your question?

Brooke8:17 PM

I was reading some historical notes by William Mclellin. He poses an interesting question. If God commands someone via revelation and the Spirit to get baptized by someone else, is that power and authority from God?

Kaylie8:19 PM

If someone receives revelation to get baptized, then that is wonderful as long as it is done by someone with proper Priesthood authority. You don't need authority to receive personal revelation though so that wouldn't be it, it's just the spirit guiding you.

Brooke8:24 PM

Does not a command from God via revelation and the Spirit give someone Priesthood authority?

Kaylie8:28 PM

No, you receive Priesthood authority by the laying on of hands by someone who holds that authority already.

Brooke8:31 PM

God is not powerful enough to give someone authority?

Kaylie8:32 PM

Priesthood authority is not received through personal revelation, God does not let his Priesthood work that way. He put forth the way that His Priesthood is given and it is by the laying on of hands. What brought you to ask this?

Brooke8:34 PM

So if a person claims authority via revelation from God, they are lying and God did not given them a revelation?

Kaylie8:35 PM

I have already told you the answer. It also depends on who the person receiving revelation, has stewardship over. So for example, the prophet has been called of God with His Priesthood authority to receive revelation for everyone, because it isn't personal revelation. But a friend could not claim authority of revelation for another friend because that would be personal revelation. I have to go now, thank you have a good day!

[She abruptly end the chat with a snide "I have already told you" The chat session has ended.]

Hi there!

Carrollyn8:42 PM

Nice to meet you, I´m Carrollyn ****, a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ! How are you?

Brooke8:42 PM

Is there an example in the Bible of an angel giving someone priesthood?

Carrollyn8:43 PM

Hmmm I´m not quite positive, but I will investigate for a second right now and let you know if anything comes up! Are you a member of the church?

For right now I can´t find anything so I don´t believe so, but I´m not positive I´m sorry! May I ask why you would like to know? Maybe I can help with some other question that has to do with that question.

Brooke8:49 PM

I was reading some historical notes by William Mclellin. He poses an interesting question. If God commands someone to via revelation and the Spirit to get baptized by another person, does that then give the other person priesthood authority to baptize? Can God priesthood to whoever He wishes?

Carrollyn8:50 PM

That is a really interesting question, thank you! I honestly don´t have a very specific answer, but I know God is capable of whatever He believes is necessary, and through the Priesthood and our Priesthood leaders we can know what God wants us to do.

Brooke8:55 PM

We can't just ask God directly?

Carrollyn8:53 PM

When it comes to ordinances and covenants that need to be performed by some who holds the authority of God, the Priesthood, we need to authorization from the Priesthood leader.

Brooke9:03 PM

God can't authorize it Himself?

Carrollyn9:03 PM

He authorizes it through His Priesthood Leaders. HE reveals His instructions through the prophets.

Brooke9:05 PM

That is amazing. I thought God was all powerful. Why do you limit God?

Carrollyn9:05 PM

Of course He is, and for that reason He has established an order in His church.

We don´t limit God, we recognize that He has chosen servants here on the Earth to direct His work, under His guidance.

Brooke9:07 PM

If you don't limit Him, then you are saying any non-LDS that believes that God has authorized them is wrong or confused. What makes you think this?

Carrollyn9:08 PM

Because we can trace back authorization from God. It's kind of like His permission to act in His name if that makes sense.

Brooke9:12 PM

That has nothing to do with my question. As you say God is all powerful and if He wished to order things in any way he wished, he could. So God could authorize someone by being born into the tribe of Aaron, an Angelic visitation, or by revelation. There are people today that agree with William Mclellin, that God can give priesthood via revelation and the Spirit. You are saying God does not do that? That only leaves option that you believe those people are liars. Is there another option?

Carrollyn9:13 PM

I´m sure He could do that, but I am not familiar with any example. He can do anything. I invite you to pray about though!

Brooke9:14 PM

Well that is different than what you were saying a moment ago. I have prayed about and I know that God could do that!

Do you have any reason to think that God would not do that?

Brooke9:21 PM

No. OK. Anything else I can help you with?
